APM doesn't work

Hello,

Since the newer kernels, APM support stopped working
(the system freezes). However, I noticed that it does
work when the kernel isn't booted yet, in the grub
menu. Is there any way I can tell the kernel to stay
away from the APM support? So I'd lose all cool things
like ejecting PCMCIA cards before going into sleep mode,
but at least it'd work again...
