A way to avoid this is to use the -d flag for apt-get and just
download the packages, watch the mailing lists for a while without
updating the packages list, and then run apt-get again to actually
install the packges. If you keep an eye on the list of packages to be
updated you can watch for things which may be especially such as glibc
or perl.
Also, when you run into the occasional problem, http://bugs.debian.org
is your friend. Frequently you can find a work-around in one of the
bug reports.
