I haven't used a 2.4 kernel yet, but the Intel card is supported with
the 'e100' module. You can get the source from Intel's web site. I
know it works on a RH6.2 system.
Did you put 'alias eth1 tulip' in the modules files?
Do you have 'iface eth1 ...' in /etc/network/interfaces ?
