I've had similar problems. Following suggestions here, I got my
Logitech Trackman Marble to work by setting up GPM as follows:

device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
repeat_type=raw
type=ps2
append=""

Once that was done, I set XFree up as follows:

Section "Pointer"
        Protocol "ps/2"
        Device "/dev/gpmdata"

The two vital things (in my case at least) were the repeat_type=raw
for GPM and the Device "/dev/gpmdata" in XFree.
