depends on exactly what you want to monitor....but I prefer lower layer
stuff like snort http://www.snort.org and tcpdump.  With either of those,
you can watch the actual raw packets and learn more about networking than
most people care to know about....such as reading your email messages as
they pass from your computer to the server, icq messages, and anything else
sent in plain text.  An advantage to snort is that you get to see
cracking/portscanning/worms trying to invade your network in real
time.....plus it alerts you to problem traffic.
