I think you mean /dev/usb/scanner0!

I had the same problem because installing the device under
/dev/usbscanner. But your configuration seems to be correct. Do you
have configured /etc/sane.d/epson.conf? You must ad an entry like:
usb /dev/usb/scanner0.
