problems with SMC Ultra & diald at the same time

I have a strange dilemma. I'm upgrading to Debian 2.2R2 (potato) and
either (1) SMC Ultra won't work (when using kernel-image-2.2.18pre21 or
kernel-image-2.2.17) or (2) diald won't work (when using kernel-image-2.0.36).

When trying kernel 2.2.x, all combinations of "io=" and "irq=" will not work
when trying to "modprobe smc-ultra". This smc-ultra driver has worked for
years in various incarnations of the kernel. (BTW, I did try the combination
of "io=" and "irq=" that worked in the past, but it does not work.)

When running kernel 2.0.36 on Debian 2.2R2, diald fails because
"bind snoopfd: Bad file descriptor". That is, once the line is brought up
due to an IP request, and then the line is brought down due to inactivity,
the line will not come up again due to "sl0: xmit call when iface is down"
(presumably due to the inability for the interface to be snooped by diald).

Are these true bugs that should be reported? It's a real drag having to
run "/etc/init.d/diald restart" every time I want to use the internet.

Thanks.
