It could be bad memory.  I can't say that I've ever had memory die while
in use (i.e. in a system that had been fine for a long time, hadn't been
rebooted, etc).  I recently had something similar happen, though, and it
turned out to be a frozen CPU fan.  The system overheated during its
nightly cron work and died.

If the machine has been up pretty much constantly, and hasn't been taken
apart or anything recently, then this might well be what happened.
