LILO gives: L 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 (ad infinitum,) after install (2.2r0)

Hello,

Never had lilo probs quite like this before - after installing on a new 
machine I get:
L 40 40 40 40 40 etc.

Whats up?

Tried with/without a small /boot partition, installing LILO on /dev/hda, 
/dev/hda1, etc. (all combinations).  But same result.

Pointers appreciated,
