In the unstable distribution, the default runlevel is 2 and gdm 
installs itself in runlevels 2 through 5. To disable gdm in runlevel 2, 
you could do a 'update-rc.d gdm stop 99 2 .' If you want it back, just 
replace the 'stop' with a 'start'.
