i don't have an amanda user. i do have a 'backup' user which runs the amanda program according to xinetd:
service amanda
{
	socket_type	= dgram
	protocol	= udp
	wait		= yes
	user		= backup
	server		= /usr/lib/amanda/amandad
}

and as i had in my original mail the user backup is a member of the correct group. 

also, it can't access 2 out of the 3 disks on the system, so it can access something..just not everything. all permissions are identical
