weird font error messages

What is going on with fonts? I am seeing this trying to run a Gtk perl
program in woody:

 -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-koi8-r does not
seem to be a valid font on your system, falling back to fixed
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-koi8-r does not
seem to be a valid font on your system, falling back to fixed
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-koi8-r does not
seem to be a valid font on your system, falling back to fixed
-misc-fixed-bold-r-normal-*-*-130-*-*-c-*-iso8859-9 does not seem to
be a valid font on your system, falling back to fixed
new_font is not of type Gtk::Gdk::Font at /usr/local/bin/pronto-main
line 660.

...the "open source" movement has, at its roots, the point of _getting
away from_ impractical things like defending principles on
principle...Putting the word "ethics" and "open source" in the same
sentence is pretty much a denial of ethics, unless your preferred
ethical system is based purely on pragmatic matters...
