Yes, sorry I forgot to mention this, but I first tried adding my user to the
audio group, and that didn't work. I then tried playing sounds as root and
that didn't work either, still same "can't open /dev/dsp" msg that I got as
the user.

Have you checked the permissions on /dev/dsp (e.g. can you play sound under
root, but not a normal user?)? You need to make sure you have right access.
In
debian this is normally done by making users members of the audio group
