Well,... okay, but since it worked just fine before I did the update, it feels broken
to me now. I'd still like to know why it's doing this weird thing, even if I decided
to be persuaded by you not to use an xlogin screen.

Yes, there's an .Xauthority file in both the /root directory and my ordinary user
directory.
