Well, the same could be said for Red Hat &c., except that when you're
looking for packages you wind up with, for a given program, a dozen or
so slightly different mutually incompatible packages that have a
fractional chance of actually working with your installed system.
If you really want to install an RPM-based package on your Debian
system, you can convert between formats using Alien. There's no
guarantee that it'll work or interface particularly well with your
system, and in particular initialization scripts (under Debian, stuff
under /etc/rc?.d) don't transfer over particularly well. Most things
do at least *run* after Alien, though.
