I've had cable access via RoadRunner for two years and I've been very
happy. They gave me a 3Com 509 ethernet card and it is well supported
by linux. I use dhcpcd to obtain my IP address which very rarely
changes (although lots of people seem to use "pump") instead.

I serve my cable modem to my wife's computer via IP masquerading. I
bought two cheap 10/100 PCI ethernet cards ($15 each - Realtek 8139
chipset) and built my own crossover cable to connect them (e.g.

You can buy crossover cables, too, pretty cheap. Then it's just a
matter of configuring the networking stuff. In general... it's a very
inexpensive method, it's fast, and it's relatively easy to setup.
