Squid dies periodically

Hi all,

squid dies periodically an my debian 2.2, with following error messages:

FATAL: You've run out of swap file numbers.
or
FATAL: file_map_allocate: Exceeded filemap limit

To start squid again, i have to remove all cache dirs and rebuild them with
"squid -z", but after some time i get again the errors above.

cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max shows 1024
Is this sufficient? If not, what´s a reasonable number? And, does this
parameter have an impact on the swap file numbers?

Thanks to all
Florian
