(/etc/inittab, by the way.)

That's Red Hat and derived distributions, not Debian. Debian's default
runlevel is 2, and there are no distinct definitions for any of 2, 3, 4,
or 5; in other words, runlevel 5 isn't defined to be the "X" runlevel.
