Uploading problems

Hi, I'm experiencing very frustrating problems while uploading via ftp,
http, cvs. I'm using a PCMCIA modem on a potato laptop.

I can download with no problems, navigate etc.
When it comes to uploading, then the session freezes and I have to
disconnect. From my /var/log/messages :

Dec 12 19:28:38 paperoga pppd[1572]: Serial connection established.
Dec 12 19:28:38 paperoga pppd[1572]: Using interface ppp0
Dec 12 19:28:38 paperoga pppd[1572]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS2
Dec 12 19:28:48 paperoga pppd[1572]: local IP address bla.bla.bla
Dec 12 19:28:48 paperoga pppd[1572]: remote IP address etc.etc.etc
Dec 12 19:18:42 paperoga pppd[1470]: No response to 4 echo-requests
Dec 12 19:18:42 paperoga pppd[1470]: Serial link appears to be
disconnected.

Sometimes and without appearent reason, if I first of all download
something
and THEN upload, then ftp put magically works.

I'll be grateful to anybody will help me fix this as uploading is all my
laptop is about... :-((
Which log file would be the most appropriate to be checked to correctly
report/debug ?

Cheers,
