okay first thing we need more input from your log entries.  second, for
my box all i did was to edit /etc/email-addresses to add my correct
email address for my login name.

one reason you may got a timeout is that the remote site was busy.
another is since you're on dialup you never gave exim the chance to send
or finish processing the queue.  by default exim checks the queue every
30 minutes but this can be changed in /etc/init.d/exim.
