My sincere thanks to all who've replied on this, either on the list or
privately. Meanwhile I've downloaded the OSS file and everything seems
to be working (at least, something comes out of the speakers though I
haven't actually got anything to test it with yet!). I'll work on the
helpful suggestions made and see if I can get the kernel version to
function later.
