Ok. Let me suggest you some.

1) es1371 is not an OSS/Free driver, so that a cat /proc/sound or a cat
/dev/sndstat won't produce anything.
2) es1371 also does not support a cat file.wav > /dev/dsp. You need a
normal program to do it. Try apt-get install sox and then use the
command "play". 
3) If you're not listening to anything, remember to turn on the speakers
because this chip doesn't have an amplificator. Also, most of the time
the mixer is set up with a very low volume with which you can't hear
anything.
