Don't use xhost - instead, either
'export XAUTHORITY=/home/youruser/.Xauthority' when you su to root, or
make /root/.Xauthority a symbolic link to the .Xauthority in your normal
home directory.

'dpkg -p xbase-clients' says:

  - xhost, a very dangerous program that you should never use;
