You don't have a whole stack in /var/lib/dpkg/status.yesterday.* ?

They may be a bit out of date, but an 'apt-get upgrade' should re-sync
them (and, yes, reinstall a bunch a stuff mindlessly, but better than
being hosed :)).

Just gunzip one and cp it to '/var/lib/dpkg/status'
