OK, got it, so now I can shut up about this whole thing.

I noticed this message after shutting down X:

sh: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp: No such file or directory
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

A bit of poking around showed that xkb is part of the xbase-clients package,
so I updated that and all is good again keyboard-wise.

But it turned out that the mouse only works properly if I log in and use
startx. If I use wdm, it's still dead... (BTW, it appears that one of these
upgrades caused X to look for its config at /etc/XF86Config instead of the
old location, /etc/X11/XF86Config. You may need to add a symlink to deal
with this.)
