Compile Module files

I have "located" a xxxxxx.c file in the source tree
that I would like to compile and install into the
modules directory so that I can "insmod" the file.

How does one do that with out doing a 
"make mrproper/xconfig/depens/modules/modules_install".  
There must be an easier way to compile a single routine and
copy it to the correct directory.  When I "gcc" the 
routine, I get an error that the routine must be compiled
as a module.
