Official debian packages will not put anything in /usr/local, RPMs
often do. This is actually one of the reasons I'm so fond of Debian
over RH. This use of /usr/local by the packaging system bites alot of
people on my net, because root on local machines doesn't have write
access to the NFS mounted /usr/local partition...

Note I've run across some .deb packages out side "official" channels
that do try to write to /usr/local.

Just an aside,
