RE: linux + its size

i am running debian 2.1 on a 486 laptop w/ a 125 mb hdd (actually that
was my first linux install).

right now i have about 16.5mb free.

first step: read the installation guide and get a copy onto another
machine that you can refer to, or print it out.

make sure you add scsi support during the installation.

the base install (what you have before you select packages immediately
after the first boot of your system) weighs in at well under 100mb.

when you boot for the first you you will be asked to choose a method
of selecting some standard packages, including info and the manual pages
(crucial to your sanity). choose dselect (the "hard" method) and take
the time to figure out exactly what is going on there.

have a look at all the stuff that will automatically be installed. you
can select additional packages at this time but just go with the ones it
suggests for now. (if you screw things up when you're "selecting"
packages you can always hit X (shift-x) to escape w/out writing any changes.)

hit return when you're done checking what dselect wants to install. this
takes you back to the dselect main menu.

select install. apt-get will connect to the server, tell you what packages
it is about to install and how much space will be used after both
downloading and unpacking. if these numbers are larger than the free space
left on your drive (which you can check with 'df') then choose not to continue,
go back into dselect's select and perform a liposuction (get help first).
you probably will not have to do this.

now take some time and read the manual pages for man, apt, apt-get, apt-cdrom,
dpkg, and dselect. look in /usr/man/ to see what manual pages are available.
run 'info' and have a look around that doc system.

install the rest of the packages you want using 'apt-get' from
the command line. apt-get is much less cumbersome and intimidating
than dselect. you need to know the name of the packages you want
('less /var/lib/dpkg/available' (which is a weirdly ordered list),
run dselect from a non-root virtual terminal or 'lynx debian.org/Packages'
if you are connected to the internet. it always helps if you have
another machine on the net).

to install packages using apt-get type 'apt-get install [package-i-want-one
package-i-want-two etc]'. install them two or three at a time, keeping
a careful watch on your disk space. if you are using a dial-up connection
to install this can take quite a while.

you can remove packages easily with dpkg.
