I think I *may* have fixed it by changing the order of entries in
/etc/hosts. I had 127.0.0.1 local host first and other entries later;
now  I have:
		
		127.0.0.1   acampbell.cix.co.uk
		127.0.0.1   ac
		127.0.0.1   localhost

This seems to be givin fast connections with fetchmail but it may be too
soon to talk.
