SNMP config after upgrade

Ok, I've searched the list, searched the web, and read through stuff in the
/usr/doc/snmp directory and I'm still finding myself having problems with
SNMP.

Here's the situation. I had a Debian machine on 2.1 running snmpd with
whatever version that used to be. Worked great. All I had changed was the
site specific stuff (like contact and location) and just used it. Never had
a bit of trouble with it.

So now, I upgrade to 2.2 and there's this new snmp package. It says it
can't convert my config, but that's fine, because all I want is a readonly
public entry for mrtg to access from my network monitoring box. So, sounds
good, right? Wrong. After the upgrade, mrtg can no longer talk to it. In
fact, going to the mrtg machine and running "cfgmaker public@mymachine"
yields error messages such as this:

SNMP Error:
Received SNMP response with error code
  error status: noSuchName
  index 5 (OID: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.1.0)
SNMPv1_Session (remote host: "mymachine" [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx].161
                  community: "public"
                 request ID: 1622687487
                PDU bufsize: 8000 bytes
                    timeout: 2s
                    retries: 5
                    backoff: 1)
SNMPGET Problem for sysDescr sysContact sysName sysLocation ifNumber
sysObjectID on public@lusitania

(machine name and IP address changed to protect the innocent, but they were
correct names and numbers. :)

This is with the default configuration. In the /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf file,
it even says in the comments that it's a generic default that only allows
read access to public by default. Again, that's just fine because that's
all I want!

So, does anyone have any ideas what I might be missing here? I bet it's
some so simple I'll feel stupid when I hear it, but it's got me stumped.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

-Ken
