Hi!
I guess editing the /etc/rc<whatever_your_runlevel>.d -directory and
removing the link to the xdm service (probably S99xdm -> ../init.d/xdm)
will do the trick.
The default runlevel <whatever_your_runlevel> can be found in
/etc/inittab:

# The default runlevel.
id:4:initdefault:
--- cut
