I'm using one with both GPM and X with no problems. I don't even have
a ~/.xinitrc, but in /etc/X11/XF86Config I have the following:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"
ZAxisMapping 4 5
Buttons 7
and in /etc/gpm.conf I have:
device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=25
type=imps2
append="-l \"a-zA-Z0-9_.:~/\300-\326\330-\366\370-\377\""
repeat_type=
/dev/mouse is a symlink to /dev/psaux.
I have observed that the wheel doesn't work with all X apps. It does
work with browsers (netscape, mozilla, galeon), however.
