emacs/xemacs and ispell-dictionary-alist

In Slink I could use my custom Afrikaans dictionary with both emacs
and xemacs by changing the ispell-dictionary-alist options which resulted in the following entry in my .emacs:

------------------
(custom-set-variables '(ispell-dictionary-alist
(quote (("afrikaanstex"
"[A-ZÄËÏÖÜÁÉÍÓÚÂÊÎÔÛÀÈÌÒÙa-zäëïöüáéíóúâêîôûàèìòù]"

iso-latin-1))) t))
----------------------------

Potato's emacs20 and xemacs21 complains about this saying:

"This option has been changed outside the customized buffer (mismatch)."

When I change the customize buffer from inside emacs or xemacs it
resulted in the following .emacs (this time I had a simpler definition
for afrikaanstex for testing purposes):

---------------------------

In spite of this entry in ~/.emacs created by xemacs, xemacs (and
emacs) would not allow me to use afrikaanstex as dictionary.

Does somebody have a clue how I can solve this?
