My .xsession file just sources a file that sets random environment
variables, and runs 'exec gnome-session'.  This should be enough to
get you into GNOME; from there, it's relatively easy to change your
window manager.  (I'm partial to Sawfish, which has GNOME compliance,
a reasonably nice look, is easy to tweak, and doesn't seem to suffer
from anywhere near the bloat and feature creep that Enlightenment
has.  But that's me.  :-)
