xlib books

hey all,

the only books i've seen on xlib are terrible. the huge o'reilly books are
boring, and frankly, i don't have a million years to read these 1000 page
mammoths.

i've seen one other book 'xlib by example', and it suffers tremendously from
using xlib terms to explain xlib terms. unreadable.

does anybody have any xlib book recommendations?

also, quick question about programs like oneko (the cat that runs around on
your root screen). i know this program was written in xlib, but what other
libraries allow you to draw on the root window?

i know sdl doesn't.

what about gtk+? can gtk+ programs draw directly onto the root window?

thanks!
pete
