I never had to set those (locale environment variables) to get the german keyboard to work (I set them to get german messages, though), but it's quiet interesting to know more about internals. My question is now: When you are prompted to choose a keyboard, you could suppose it working after the selection, why to choose then, if it doesn't influence the behaviour of the keyboard at all? If you choose a non-US keymap, the appropriate LC-variable (the charmap?) should be set too, shouldn't it?
