fbi only works as root?

fbi (a framebuffer console image viewer) only works on my woody box when
I'm root. What should the settings for /dev/fb0 etc be?
Currently, this is what is see:
crw--w--w- 1 root tty 29,0 Mar 9 2000 fb0

User frederik is part of the tty group:
tty:x:5:root,frederik

I don't think it's good practice to view images as root, so I'd like to
change this. I'm new to this kind of settings however, and I don't feel
comfortable messing around with it without knowing what I'm doing...
