There is an excellent package called altmail, which is a Netscape plugin
module you can use to invoke Emacs mail/news readers for mail: and news:
URLs.
The C code is very simple, and I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to
modify it to invoke something besides gnuclient (Emacs) to handle mail.

(Or, you could just give up pine and switch to Emacs :)
