I agree. One of the main points I like about Linux are its
plain text config files.

If I install a package and want to customize its config I
cd to /etc, do emacs package-[TAB] and there will be either
a directory or a config file. Note that I do not have to
know which program to use for editing it, any editor will do
for any program.

Often, the plain text file contains extensive comments and
commented-out values I might want to use, sparing me the need to
wade through the docs.

Of course a tool for editing some binary config format *could*
be just as practical, but then I'd have to learn a new one
for every package - no thanks...
