Under DOS there is no ability to idle waiting for an event.  Instead the
system must continously poll the keyboard, which takes 100% CPU; it wastes
laptop power and it also kills performance of other applications running
in Linux.

Idon't remember what the setting is, but somewhere there is a setting for
how aggressive DOSEMU is in detecting idle DOS applications.  Try turning
that up and see if you can't make DOSEMU force the issue a little bit :}
