Quoting Wayne Topa(wtopa@dmcom.net):

Joey

A bit more info (abet a bit confusing, at least to me)
VT3 root-Deb-Potato:~# strace splitvt |less
ends with the message
"Can't initialize screen: Standard input and output must be a tty"
I guess due to the pipe to less?

VT1 root-Deb-Potato:~# strace splitvt
has near the end
"stat("/dev/ptya0", 0xbfffd85c) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
write(2, "No available pseudo terminals.\n", 31No available pseudo
terminals."

This last message is correct, in so far as I do 'not' have any /dev/ptya*
entries, just /dev/pty[p-s][0-9a-f]
