Re: stymied by Deb, went FreeBSD instead

i have 13gb hd and have installed FreeBSD, Mandrake, and SuSE...but the best
for me is Debian/Stormix. I use Partion Magig to create the linux ext2 and
swap.
Then go to Stormix.com and d/l the newest iso named hail. Its really Debian
potato with 2.16 kernel and helix-gnome for really good measure.
I burned the iso cd in FreeBSD with burncd. Then set your bios to boot from cd
and boot the Debian/stormix. I think Stormix has the easiest installer . You
can easily select the packages you want installed or just take the
default--about 500 pkgs and 600mb.
Debian/stormix installer recognized my sound card and ethernet card. It set up
my monitor in X just by clicking on the model number. I've done it the long way
with XF86Config and modprobing the sound etc.....this will get you up on the
net with sound in less than 20-30 minutes.
I then use Debian apt-get and dselect to add packages after the install but i
have to tell you that Stormix package mgr which is a graphical front end for
apt-get is much easier to use especially in selecting available packages , and
it tells me I have 525 pks currently installed from a grand total of 4360
available from my sources list which is also easier to edit with stormix pkg
mgr.
I am using Gnome/Sawfish with the Helix gnome updates which as i said is in
the base Debian/stormix install and its a pretty amazing desktop. I have left
FreeBSD on my hd but Debian is the what i like.
