That's a strong possibility. If you're using shadow and WU uses getpwnam rather than
getspnam, it won't get the password and won't be able to authenticate. Does WU IMAP
support PAM authentication? That would make your life easier if it can be built with
PAM support since then the actual authentication checking is done is shared libraries.

I've been a longtime qmail (with maildirs) user and I highly recommend the use of
maildirs rather than the old mailbox files. The only imap server I've gotten to work
satisfactorily for me is courier-imap. This is a maildir-only imap server which I
found naturally enough on the qmail web site. The link is:
