I've had (surprisingly) good luck with Abiword.  StarOffice works, but
it's a bloated stuck pig.

'strings' is frequently useful for stripping the essence out of
recalcitrant proprietary data formats, and may turn up some interesting
surprises given MS Word's rather broken handling of deletions.
