I had no luck make-ing xconfig with 2.3.99-pre8 so I downloaded
2.3.99-pre7. This time I had more luck:
- make xconfig worked fine
- the kernel compiled without problems
- the kernel booted fine and seems to run fine (I am typing this
message under it)
I didn't notice any subjective increase in speed. PPP seems to work fine
after I updated /etc/modutils/aliases and ran update-modules. My sound
card is working fine (SB PCI128). So far so good!
The only thing is that even after following the instructions in
/usr/doc/kernel-package/README.gz to try and get my username to appear
in 'uname -a', all I get is:
@phoenix:[/home/ssahmed] uname -a
Linux phoenix 2.3.99-pre7 #1 Sun May 21 02:24:43 EDT 2000 i686 unknown
Here is how I compiled 2.3.99-pre7:
(as normal user)
make xconfig
make-kpkg build
fakeroot make -f debian/rules kernel-image-deb
(as root)
dpkg -i ../kernel-image-2.3.99-pre7_Custom.1.00_i386.deb
Has anyone else tried this trick to get their username to appear in
'uname -a' ?
Thanks.
