Failure to connect to some sites

I don't even know where to begin debugging this one.

For a long time now, I've known that there were some sites on the net
that simply will not talk to me. For example, www.compaq.com,
www.toshiba.com, sourceforge.net, etc. (The last one being my current
pressing problem :-)

I have a small network in the house and for a long time I've had
a modem hanging off my sparc box. From the sparc I could always
talk to everything, but other machines on the network
couldn't. Seems likely that there's a problem with my network
config on the sparc or something, right?

Ok, I fussed with that until I couldn't stand it anymore and I
gave up. I moved the modem off the sparc and onto my linux
desktop machine (running Debian 2.1). I figured this way, even
if I couldn't get to those sites from the other machines on the
network, at least I could get to them from there.

But I can't. And I am absolutely clueless and entirely
frustrated. What's worse, if I boot the desktop box into Win98,
everything works just fine.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really like to hear them.

Connections to most places on the net work just fine, so I can't
believe that it's simply a routing problem. Still, I'm not quite
sure how to interpret these differences so here are the two routing
tables.

This is the output of ipconfig /all under Win98:

And the routing table that works under Win98

Active Routes:

The corresponding ifconfig under Linux is:

And the routing table for Linux

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface

Anyone see the trouble?

                                        Be seeing you,
                                          norm
