R: CD R/W no CD present?

no, you don't need it since your HP is scsi. maybe this can make a little
confusion ..
.. if you load it. if you don't, all you need should be sr_mod and sg.
unless you have an ide cdrom. in this case, i'm a little bit lost, but i
know there's an howto about it.

have you tried cdrecord on the command line to burn cds?
i know nothing about xcdroast, but used cdrecord quite a bit.
cdrecord want a special syntax for devices, usually a triple x,y,z, where,
IIRC
x is scsi host, y is scsi-id for cdburner, and z is scsi lun (usually 0)

no, you should use /dev/scd0 a la
mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/scd0 /cdwrite

(if /cdwrite exists)
