You left out the slave link for the man pages, hence they weren't
updated.  Reread that alternatives man page (yes, it's confusing).

I think: update-alternatives --config /usr/bin/awk awk /usr/bin/gawk \
	/usr/share/man/man1/gawk.1.gz
