Boot from the rescue disk (and root disk if you use potato) as if you
are going to do a new install.  In other words, do NOT specify a
"root=/dev/hdn" line at the syslinux prompt.

As soon as you see the initial setup screen, hit alt-f2 and then enter
to open the second VC.  You may now issue e2fsck commands as
necessary.
