make sure apt is right up to date: use dpkg to install that and
then
try again. If you still have problems, they may need to be
reported
as bugs in apt.
Apt is brand new, but is I think just choking
on a dependency problem, left-over from an libc5->libc6 upgrade.
I took a new CDrom (2.1) and did re-deselect, which did a lot of upgrades
to various stuff.
The end result is that everything seems OK, except a remaining dependency
problem, based on Samba, but it won't remove, and it depends on
libpam-util, and thus I cannot remove libpam-util (which is not
configured), and which is the reported error.
running dpkg --pending --remove ...
(Reading database ... 18478 files and directories currently
installed.)
Removing samba ...
dpkg: error processing samba (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of libpam0:

Is this stuff supposed to be easy? :-)
